Interview with Antonio Bezerra

Brazilian photographer Antonio Bezerra is already very famous in his home country. However, the rest of the world still hasn't discovered him yet. "Through My Eyes"--his first photo book--could definitely change that. The book is not only a collection of male nude photography, but also a very personal insight into Bezerra's mind.

Antonio, what was important for you when you selected the pictures for "Through My Eyes"?

One of the most important cornerstones of my work is my obsession for youth. I love this universe of virility. Shadow and light, heat and sensuality, simplicity and naturalness ... these are the bricks my little world is made of.

How do you implement your visions?

I always try to catch that special moment, when I do a shooting--or sometimes even to create it. I talk to the models; I spend a lot of time with them, sometimes a couple of days. I create a friendly atmosphere of nearness and intimacy. That's how I motivate them to be more open.

Have you also had some bad experiences with models?

Oh, of course. I generally don't take photos of persons that I do not like, but sometimes you are already in the middle of a shooting when you suddenly have to realize that your ideas doesn't match the model's ideas. I try my best to explain my imagination as detailed as possible. But I abort the shooting if there are basic misunderstandings or controversy. I do not make compromises.

As a photographer you're rather romantic. As a private person you're doing intensive martial arts. How does that fit together?

It works perfectly for me! I love karate and kung fu--especially because of the contrasts. In fact, this daily training is my way of keeping my life in balance.
